Panic Attacks

Panic attacks are a common condition and are psychologically founded.  A panic attack can be a one-off experience as a result of an anxious or stressful situation or they can be reoccurring.  

So how is it that a person can experience feelings of panic in situations or environments which are considered to be safe by others?  Well, many of us lead stressful lives and we all respond differently to the stresses and anxieties in our lives.  Panic attacks usually appear to result from a prolonged period of anxiety of which they may or may not be aware of.

What is a Panic Attack?

Panic attacks can exist as a symptom on its own or they can be present as part of another condition.  Panic attacks can develop at times of severe stress, or from a particular seeding event, or can be a learned behaviour from a family member.

The triggering event may be a traumatic situation or event where the person’s autonomic nervous system is unable to cope creating a breakdown in homeostasis.  The person will have activated their fight and flight response which is an unconscious and automated response.  The fight and flight response is a response to potentially challenging or threatening experience and is not subject to conscious control.  It prepares the body for immediate action, an emergency reaction - to stand and fight or to run away - in order to protect itself from perceived harm.  As soon as the person becomes highly anxious then the fight and flight response is triggered and a physical and biological change occurs (see below). 

There will be a seeding event or situation when the first panic attack is triggered unconsciously.  Once a person experiences high levels of anxiety in a particular situation and a panic attack has been triggered, the unconscious mind can learn very easily to fear that situation.  The panic response becomes conditioned in certain situations and places or it can become free-floating. 

We can reduce our fight and flight response by hypnotherapy so that it triggers in more appropriate situations – when there is a real life threatening situation to escape from. 

 

TREATMENT

A panic attack is triggered unconsciously.  This fact is highly relevant.  When the person’s unconscious mind has learnt to “attach” panic or anxiety to a certain situation then desensitisation or deconditioning needs to take place. 

Hypnotherapy can alleviate anxiety by:

  • Direct suggestion therapy
  • Behavioural training both in trance and using self-hypnosis.
  • Breaking the mind loops of anxiety
  • Removing the symptoms below
  • Breaking the habitual responses
  • Desensitising the sufferer from the stressors
  • Regaining motivation and helping the individual moving forward to a higher quality of life.

Once the sufferer’s unconscious mind has learnt calm, relaxation and control through hypnosis, it is possible to look back at the original seeding event in an unemotional calm way.  Although therapy can take several sessions, a course of three sessions will alleviate major symptoms.

What are the symptoms of a panic attack?

The attacks consist of high levels of anxiety and fear, together with physical and psychological symptoms.  Each of these symptoms can influence each other leading to a worsening of the attack so it becomes a vicious circle. 

Physical symptoms may include:

  • Hyperventilation
  • Shortness of breath and smother sensations
  • Palpitations and accelerated heart rate
  • Chest discomfort or pain
  • Sweating
  • Dizziness, unsteady feelings or faintness
  • Nausea or abdominal distress
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • Flushes or chills
  • Trembling or shaking

Psychological symptoms may include:

  • A fear of having a heart attack or stroke
  • A fear of going crazy or that they are around to do something uncontrolled
  • A sense of imminent danger, impending doom
  • An urge to escape

Other common conditions associated with panic attacks

  • Agoraphobia      (fear of open spaces)
  • Social phobia     (fear of embarrassment, situations where somebody

                                      has to perform)

  • Specific phobia   (such as fear of cats, dogs, buttons, flying)
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder    (PTSD)
  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder       (GAD)
