Hypnosis to Overcome Sleep Problems and Insomnia

Insomnia- the inability to fall asleep or to enjoy uninterrupted sleep - is not a trivial complaint.

Sleep is important for both physical and psychological reasons and insufficient sleep can lead to fatigue, slower reaction times, irritability and other mood problems, and poor concentration.  These in turn can affect work, relationships and quality of life.

Sleep problems may present as

  * difficulty in getting to sleep (sleep onset insomnia)

  * staying asleep (sleep maintenance insomnia)

  * waking early (terminal insomnia).

Worry is a common and important factor in insomnia. When people worry about things they tend mentally to go over things repeatedly, without coming up with a solution to the problem. This leads to an increase in mental arousal which prevents sleep. This can create a vicious circle where worry leads to insomnia, which creates more worry about the effects of sleeplessness, which leads to more sleep disturbance.

If you are one of the 15% of people who view this site before 6.00 am then you know the problem of not sleeping.

If you want to overcome your sleep problems, then call 01276 65598 to book an appointment or email info@surreyhypnosisclinic.co.uk to find out more.

Hypnotherapy can be a rapid technique to break the debilitating habit of sleep depravation.

How hypnotherapy can help

Having 2-3 sessions of hypnotherapy can make getting to sleep easier.  Some people experience changes after the first session.

A variety of specific treatment techniques may be used to address the inability to relax, the thought patterns and the behaviour that serve to create or maintain insomnia.

Inability to relax may be reduced by the use of relaxation techniques.

Cognitive treatment techniques are used to reduce the impact of thoughts that keep the mind alert.

Identifying and altering behaviour patterns that contribute to insomnia, and encouraging new behaviours that aid sleep, can all form part of a treatment programme.

Cognitive behavioural treatment of insomnia is likely to begin with a detailed assessment and formulation.

Treatment will include general advice regarding factors such as exercise, diet, the use of alcohol and caffeine.  Environmental factors such as noise, temperature, comfort of bed and the effect of sleeping partners are also addressed.

Other Sleep Disorders

Hypnotherapy has also been found to be helpful in treatment of other sleep disorders such as:

  • nocturnal panic attacks
  • dream-induced anxiety
  • night terrors
  • bruxism (grinding teeth)
  • snoring
  • enuresis (bed wetting)
  • being frightened of being in the house on your own

  • being a light sleeper

  • being anxious

  • your partner snoring

  • early morning light wakes you

  • worrying about something in particular

  • drinking too much alcohol, caffeine

Secondary insomnia

Secondary insomnia refers to sleep problems that are a symptom of an underlying medical condition.  Physical health problems which result in pain may lead to insomnia.  Psychological problems such as anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder may lead to sleep onset insomnia or waking as a result of vivid, frightening dreams.

Stressful life events such as divorce, death of a spouse or impending surgery can often trigger sleep disturbances which may persist beyond adjustment to the event itself.  In addition, our own habits and behaviour patterns may contribute to insomnia.
