Managing Hyperventilation in Camberley, Surrey

What is Hyperventilation?

Hyperventilation is an increase in the rate of breathing.  Hyperventilation may occur due to a number of causes, most of them related to anxiety, fear or irrational emotional outbursts.  It is the central component to a panic attack and promotes the panic attack further.

For hypnosis and hypnotherapy for anxiety and hyperventilation, call the Surrey Hypnosis Clinic on 01276 65598 or email info@surreyhypnosisclinic.co.uk.

Hypnotherapy can help alleviate hyperventilation by desensitising and deconditioning the sufferer from the stressors of the situation, and help retrain the unconscious mind to breath more evenly and naturally and so breaking any habitual responses.  Any frightening thoughts and mind loops of anxiety are dealt with.

What happens during hyperventilation?

When someone is hyperventilating they are over-breathing.

The body is:

  • Getting too much oxygen (though the sufferer may not feel to be the case).
  • And there is a fall in carbon dioxide (CO2) -  this reduction causes the symptoms such as breathlessness.

By changing the breathing, the sufferer is able to control amount of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the body.  You’ve most probably seen people use a paper bag.  The paper bag helps control the amount of oxygen that can be breathed in (therefore restricts the amount of oxygen available) and allows for the same air to be re-used (which contains CO2).
