Hair Pulling - TrichotillomaniaTrichotillomania (hair pulling) is not uncommon, affecting at least 2% of the population in the UK. It is a condition where a person has the urge to pull out their own hair - from their scalp, from their eyelashes or eyebrows – because it is easily accessible. They may also pull out body hair too. The impulse can be overwhelming. This behaviour can initially start as a reaction to stress and can progress into a habit and as the habit progresses they may lose all reason for it. Using cognitive behavioural therapy and hypnosis can be very effective. The two elements of the treatment is about learning about anxiety and hypnosis to overcome the hair pulling urges.
